Big rocks, isolated roads and gold

We are heading for home! Our first stop was Mt Augustus, a giant "rock" 500km by road SW of Exmouth. The roads were very isolated, in about 800km of driving we saw five oncoming vehicles, passed no one, and were passed by none. The roadsides had many examples of WAs famous wildflowers. Along the way we found an abandoned shearers shed and the ghost town of Gwalia - a closed gold mining town near Leonora - now reopened as a pit mine. We are in Laverton, the first (or last) point on the "Outback Way" a dirt road that traverses the outback from central WA to near Winton in Queensland. Tomorrow we are setting out for a three day drive to Uluru on this road where we will meet Tony's brother and his girlfriend.

Campsite.

Julia is enjoying the wildflowers that occur along the roadsides.

Shearers shed - abandoned.

Shearers quarters, on the road to Mt Augustus. Near Cobra.

"Cattle Pool", a natural billabong near Mt Augustus.

Max and some aboriginal engravings.

Amazing colours at Mt Augustus.

Local lizards.

A drum for getting the mail across the Gascoyne River when it was in flood.

Mt Gould Lock-Up.

More amazing wildflowers. There were rafts of these along the roadsides.

Laura and Max with a horse. We were in another "Donga" hotel at the start of the Gunbarrel highway, another route across the desert.

The new Gwalia mine.

One of the old mining dwellings that are being kept in their original state at Gwalia. The kids had a great time exploring these.
