The Outback Way: The Journey

The Outback Way extends from Laverton in central WA to Winton in central Queensland, providing a interesting alternative to the top route (which we traveled on the way) and the Nullarbor plain. We drove for three days (about 400km each day), camping at isolated spots a few hundred metres off the road.  Along the way we learned how to "geo-cache", where we used Julia's phone to locate about nine caches that have hidden at interesting spots on the way. The kids loved zeroing in on the spots and searching for waterproof hidden containers and writing in the log books (you also swap treasure - loom bands in our case, for treasure left by earlier visitors). Julia and Tony loved it because it got us to stop and head off into some interesting places, one a waterhole, 5km off the main road. The wide vistas on the road of the Great Victoria Desert, mountains and mesas/jump-ups were great.
A fire in the desert.

Max having breakfast. The table was packed away the night before for a quick start.

Docker River Campsite. We found a geocache here.

Unexpected relief in the desert.

We made it to Kata Tjuta (halfway!).
